Four Columns or Five
Twenty divides evenly as 1, 2, 4, 5, 10 and 20. Strip out the splits that make a ribbon rather than a collage and two arrangements survive. 4 × 5 Grid puts four columns over five rows, so every cell lies a quarter wider than it is tall. 5 × 4 Grid turns that on its end: five columns, four rows, cells that stand upright. Both fill row by row from the top left.
Which one you want is decided entirely by how you held the phone. Get it right and each photo keeps 95 percent of itself on the square canvas the editor already opens with. Get it wrong and the same photo keeps 59. That is the widest gap on this page. It costs nothing to fix.
Columns and Rows That Bunch
Columns 4 · 6 · 6 · 4 splits the canvas into four equal columns then cuts them into four, six, six and four cells, so the photos at the edges stand taller than the ones in the middle. Columns 6 · 4 · 4 · 6 reverses it. Rows 4 · 6 · 6 · 4 does the same trick in horizontal bands. All three fill in reading order for the rows and column by column for the columns, which is worth knowing before you add twenty files.
They buy rhythm and they charge for it. The best any of the uneven arrangements manages, on its own favourite canvas, is 76 percent against the grids' 95. At twenty cells there is no room left to be clever. Every deviation from equal turns some cell into a letterbox.
One Big Photo or a Hole in the Middle
Hero and Nineteen sits on a five by five base and hands the first photo a block two wide and three tall, 24 percent of the arrangement, as much ground as six of the others. The remaining nineteen are all one size, so only the first photo needs picking. On a square it holds 75 percent of an upright photo.
Ring of Twenty is the odd one. Twenty photos are exactly the outer ring of a six by six grid, so the middle opens into a hole covering 44 percent of the arrangement. Nothing fills it unless you put something there: a colour, a name, an age, a date. On Tall 3:4 the twenty photos around it still keep 91 percent each, which makes it the third best crop on this page and the only one that comes with somewhere to write.
Why Twenty Photos Want a Square Canvas
Every other count on this site ends with the same instruction: stretch the canvas. Six photos want a canvas half again as tall as a phone photo. Eight want the sheet turned sideways. Ten want something close to 15:8, nearly twice as wide as it is tall. Twenty breaks the pattern.
Here is the arithmetic. In 5 × 4 Grid, five columns share the width and four rows share the height, so each cell comes out four fifths as wide as it is tall relative to the canvas under it. A phone photo held upright is three quarters. Four fifths against three quarters is a rounding error. Leave the canvas square and every photo keeps 95 percent of itself.
Turn the grid round for sideways photos and the same thing happens in reverse. 4 × 5 Grid on the same square keeps 95 percent of a 4:3 photo. One canvas, two grids. The only decision left is which way you were holding the phone when you took the pictures.
Chase the last 5 percent if you like, though the answer is stranger than it looks. The slots on their own want a 15:16 canvas. Type that in and you get 98 percent, not a hundred, because the gap between cells comes off the width and the height in equal pixels rather than in equal proportions, which shifts the target. The canvas that genuinely crops nothing is 1500 × 1565. Nobody is going to notice the difference between that and a square, which is rather the point: at twenty photos the canvas the editor already opens with is close enough to right.
The other presets do their own jobs. On Pinterest Pin, 4 × 5 Grid keeps 92 percent of an upright photo and on Story and Reels it keeps 91. Cropping is the easy problem at twenty photos. Size is the hard one. It is also the question the other collage sites skip.
On a Phone Screen
Instagram shows a feed post 1080 pixels across whatever you upload. Divide that by five columns and each photo arrives about 194 × 246 pixels. A 12 megapixel photo is 4032 pixels wide, so the feed is showing roughly one twentieth of the width your camera recorded, on a screen you hold at arm's length.
That number decides which photos belong. A portrait works. A half body shot works. A group photo taken from the back of a hall becomes texture. Sort the twenty by how close the subject is before you sort them by date. Crop the distant ones tighter in your phone's own editor first.
On Paper

Choosing Which Twenty Photos Go In

Search for a 20 photo collage frame and the shops answer with multi-aperture wall frames cut for twenty separate small prints. Each window takes its own print, so a collage has nowhere to sit in one.
A printed collage wants a frame with a single window. Size the design to the photo the frame holds, never to the frame's outside measurement, then print at exactly that size. Where Twenty Photos Hit a Wall
Most built-in collage tools give up long before twenty. Google Photos stops at six photos on Android and iPhone and at nine on a computer. Instagram's own Layout tool for Stories stops at six.
