The 2 × 4 and 4 × 2 Grids
Eight equal cells, stood up or laid down. 2 × 4 Grid stacks four rows of two and reads down the page like a contact sheet. 4 × 2 Grid runs two rows of four and reads across like a strip of film. Both fill row by row, starting top left.
On the square canvas the editor starts with, each grid keeps just 65 percent of the photos it suits: 4 × 2 Grid takes upright ones, 2 × 4 Grid takes sideways ones. Put either on a 4 × 6 turned the other way from the photos and it keeps 99 percent or more.
One Big Photo With Seven Along Its Edge
Four layouts give one photo 62 percent of the width or height and line up seven more along the 38 percent left over. Seven cells sharing one edge get skinny. On a square each small cell comes out almost three times wider than tall, so an upright photo keeps 27 percent in it and a sideways one 47.
A canvas stretched along that edge rescues them. Big Left + 7 on Story and Reels keeps 89 percent of seven sideways photos. Big Top + 7 on a Wide 16:9 canvas keeps 89 percent of seven upright ones. The big cell pays for it, shrinking to a tall strip in the first case and a letterbox in the second.
Columns of Three, Two and Four
Columns 3 · 2 · 3 splits the canvas into three equal columns and cuts them into three, two and three cells. Columns 2 · 4 · 2 cuts them two, four and two. Both fill a column at a time, top to bottom, starting on the left.
Columns 3 · 2 · 3 is the gentlest of the nine with upright phone photos on the square start. None of the eight keeps less than 75 percent, which is why the button at the top opens it. Columns 2 · 4 · 2 is built for a mixed set. Its outer cells stand tall and its middle four lie wide, so on a square four upright photos keep 88 percent at the sides while four sideways ones keep 99 down the middle.
Mosaic Eight
Mosaic Eight breaks the canvas into three bands: two wide cells on top, a narrow, wide, narrow trio through the middle and three cells along the bottom. No edge carries on from one band into the next, so the whole thing reads like a magazine spread instead of a spreadsheet.
It rewards a mostly sideways set. Put upright photos in the two narrow middle cells, the third and fifth to fill. On a square they keep 82 percent. Six sideways photos around them keep at least 79.
Why Eight Photos Turn the Canvas Sideways
Six photos ask you to stretch the canvas, as the 6 Photo Collage page works out. Eight ask you to turn it round. In 4 × 2 Grid, four columns share the width while two rows share the height, so every cell comes out half as wide for its height as the canvas it sits on. Give a 3:4 phone photo a 3:4 cell and the canvas has to be 3:2, twice as wide for its height as the photo.
Photo labs already sell that sheet. A 4 × 6 Landscape print is 3:2, so eight upright phone photos keep 99 percent of themselves in 4 × 2 Grid on it. Flip the whole thing for sideways photos: 2 × 4 Grid on 4 × 6 Portrait or a Pinterest Pin keeps 99.

Four Upright and Four Sideways
Turn the phone halfway through a day and the camera roll splits down the middle. Columns 2 · 4 · 2 on Instagram Post takes that split as it comes.
Add two upright photos, then the four sideways ones, then the last two upright. The upright photos land in the tall outer cells at 88 percent and the sideways ones stack down the middle at 99. The same layout on an 8 × 8 Square print crops exactly the same.

A Single Story Frame
Story and Reels is 1080 × 1920, a 9:16 frame. In Columns 3 · 2 · 3 that means the left column from top to bottom, then the middle pair, then the right column. On Instagram, open Advanced Settings before you share and tap Write Alt Text.
