Thirty divides evenly as 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 15 and 30. Most of those make a ribbon rather than a collage, so two arrangements survive. 5 × 6 Grid runs five columns over six rows, giving cells a fifth wider than they are tall against the canvas. 6 × 5 Grid turns it over: six columns, five rows, cells that stand five sixths as wide as tall. Both fill row by row from the top left.
Neither cell shape matches a 3:4 phone photo by itself, which is the whole story of this count. 5 × 6 Grid wants a canvas five eighths as wide as it is tall. 6 × 5 Grid wants one nine tenths as wide as tall. Give each grid the canvas it asks for and you keep 96 percent. Give it the other one and the same photo keeps 70.
Columns and Rows That Bunch
Columns 7 · 8 · 8 · 7 splits the canvas into four equal columns then cuts them into seven, eight, eight and seven cells, so the photos at the edges stand taller than the ones in the middle. Columns 8 · 7 · 7 · 8 reverses it. Columns 5 · 7 · 6 · 7 · 5 spreads the same idea over five columns so the rhythm rises and falls across the whole frame. At twenty photos the uneven arrangements trail the plain grids badly. At thirty they very nearly keep up. One Big Photo or a Hole in the Middle
Hero and Twenty-Nine hands the first photo a block covering 33 percent of the arrangement, as much ground as 16 of the smallest cells beneath it. A three by three block sits beside it and a five by four band runs under both. It is built for hierarchy rather than for crop: its best anywhere in the editor is 56 percent, because that bottom band is made of wide, shallow cells.
Ring of Thirty is the strange one. Thirty photos are exactly the outer ring of ten across by seven down, so the middle opens into a panel covering 56 percent of the frame, more than the photos themselves cover. Nothing fills it unless you put something there: an age, a name, a date, a single word. The photos around the edge still keep 85 percent each.
Why Thirty Photos Make the Canvas Pick a Side
Twenty photos are easy to advise on. A five by four cell is four fifths as wide as it is tall against the canvas, an upright phone photo is three quarters, the two numbers sit close enough that a plain square needs no help at all. Thirty is not like that.
Split thirty into five columns and six rows and each cell comes out a fifth wider than it is tall relative to the canvas. Split it the other way and each cell stands five sixths as wide as tall. A 3:4 photo sits between those two. So the canvas has to move. Which way it moves depends entirely on how you were holding the phone.
Tall Canvas, Upright Photos

The square is the hedge, not the winner. Put 6 × 5 Grid on 1080 × 1080 and every upright photo keeps 91 percent. Swap the grids and a sideways photo keeps the same 91. One warning worth the ten seconds it takes to read. The grids do not merely differ on a committed canvas, they invert. On Pinterest Pin, 5 × 6 Grid keeps 96 percent of an upright photo while 6 × 5 Grid keeps 70. Same canvas, same photos, 26 points, one tap apart. That is the single biggest mistake available on this page.
Chasing perfection, the slots alone ask for a canvas five eighths as wide as it is tall. The gap between cells then shifts the target, because a gap takes equal pixels off the width and the height rather than equal proportions. The canvas that really crops nothing is 1200 × 1855, which you can type into Custom. Everything up to 6000 pixels is allowed.

Read the last two columns twice. For upright phone photos the best screen beats the best print by 1 point at six photos and by 3 at ten, because the canvas those counts want is taller or wider than any sheet a lab sells. At thirty the gap closes to nothing. Every photo shape in the table does at least as well on paper as on the best screen, so printing a collage of thirty costs you no quality at all.
How Small Each Photo Lands
Crop percentages tell you how much of a photo survives. They say nothing about how big the survivor is. At thirty photos that second question matters more.

Here is a quirk worth knowing. If you shoot video-shaped stills, meaning your phone camera set to 16:9 and held upright, then 6 × 5 Grid on A4 Portrait crops them by 0 percent.
