How to Resize an Image in Four Steps

Choose the no color option only when you are exporting PNG or WEBP. JPG has no concept of transparency and will fall back to white.
Stretch Distorts, So Use It Rarely
Stretch forces the pixels into the target box regardless of proportion. Faces go wide, circles go oval, text goes wrong. Ninety-nine times out of a hundred this is a mistake.
The exception is a texture, gradient or abstract background where nothing has a recognizable shape to distort. Stretching a blurred color wash to fill a banner is harmless. Stretching a photo of a person is a crime scene.
Keeping Quality Intact While You Shrink
Quality complaints after a resize almost always trace back to one of three things: enlarging past the source, crushing the compression or letting a naive resize algorithm smear the detail. Here is what is actually going on in each case.
Why Shrinking Is Safe and Enlarging Is Not
Shrinking throws pixels away. You have more information than the new size needs, so the software picks what survives. A 6000 pixel photo shown at 1080 loses nothing you can see, because your screen was never going to show those extra pixels anyway.
Enlarging is the opposite problem. There is no hidden detail to promote. The software spreads what you have across more space and invents the in-between pixels by averaging their neighbors. The result is a bigger, softer version of the same picture. Twenty or thirty percent up is usually fine. Doubling a small screenshot will always look like a doubled small screenshot.

Why Big Reductions Happen in Steps
Drop a 6000 pixel image straight down to 600 in one move and the resampler only gets to look at a tiny neighborhood of pixels around each destination pixel. Everything else is ignored. The classic symptom is a photo that looks slightly washed out and jaggy along fine detail like hair, fences or text.

In practice: 90 and above for anything precious, 75 to 85 for everyday photos where nobody will ever pixel-peep, below 60 only when a size limit is forcing your hand. The default here sits at 82, which is where most photos give up half their file size without giving up anything you would notice.
When a Touch of Sharpening Helps
Any downscale softens edges slightly. It has to, because neighboring pixels get averaged together. Photographers have compensated for this forever with a light sharpening pass after resizing.
Light is the right setting for photos of people and landscapes headed for social media. Medium suits screenshots, product shots on white and anything with text or hard lines. Off is correct if you are already happy or if your image has visible noise, because sharpening cheerfully amplifies grain along with detail.
Picking Between JPG, PNG and WEBP
JPG is for photographs. Millions of colors, gentle gradients, no transparency needed. It is the format every platform on earth accepts without argument.
PNG is for flat graphics: screenshots, logos, diagrams, anything with text, anything needing a transparent background. PNG is lossless, so text stays crisp instead of developing a halo. Push a photograph through PNG though and you will get a file several times larger than the JPG for no visible benefit.
WEBP splits the difference and usually wins on size, typically landing meaningfully smaller than JPG at the same visual quality while supporting transparency. Every current browser displays it. The only reason to hesitate is an old system or a printing service that has not caught up.
The DPI Confusion, Cleared Up
Someone asks for a 300 DPI image. You panic. You should not.
DPI is a note attached to the file saying how many pixels should be squeezed into each inch when printed. It changes nothing about the pixels themselves. A 1080 pixel wide image is 1080 pixels wide whether the file says 72 DPI or 300 DPI. On a screen the two are pixel-for-pixel identical.
Where DPI earns its keep is at the printer. Pixels divided by DPI gives inches. A 1800 by 1200 pixel image printed at 300 DPI covers 6 by 4 inches. The same file at 150 DPI covers 12 by 8 inches and looks noticeably softer up close.
So when a print shop asks for 300 DPI, what they actually need is enough pixels for the physical size they are printing. Multiply the inches you want by 300 and resize to that pixel count. A 6 by 4 inch print needs 1800 by 1200 pixels. An A4 poster at 8.3 by 11.7 inches needs roughly 2490 by 3510. Give them the pixels and the DPI tag becomes a formality.

Portrait at 1080 by 1350 is the workhorse. It claims the most vertical space as someone thumbs past. Instagram's profile grid now previews posts in a taller 3:4 shape rather than the old square, so tall content survives the crop better than it used to. Photos are accepted up to 30MB, which you will never approach at 1080 pixels wide.

Facebook, X and LinkedIn
All three banner formats share one trap: what you upload is not what everyone sees. Facebook crops the sides of a cover photo on mobile. X and LinkedIn both park your profile photo over the lower left corner of the header. Design for the middle and treat the outer edges as decoration.
YouTube and Pinterest
A YouTube thumbnail is judged at the size of a postage stamp on a phone before it is ever seen large. Big faces, few words, brutal contrast. Pinterest rewards the tall 2:3 shape at 1000 by 1500. Go much taller and the feed truncates your pin, which is a strange way to lose the bottom of your own design.
Resizing to Clear an Upload Limit
A surprising share of image resizing has nothing to do with looking good. It is about getting past a form that keeps saying no.
Passport and Document Portals
Government systems are famously picky and famously silent about why they rejected you. For a United States digital passport photo the published requirement is a square image between 600 by 600 and 1200 by 1200 pixels, saved as JPEG, weighing between 54KB and 10MB, on a plain white or off-white background.
The 600 by 600 preset here hits the dimensions and the file size mode handles the weight. What no resizer can do for you is the composition: head height, neutral expression, even lighting and no shadows are judged by a human or a checker on their end.
Other countries use physical measurements instead, commonly 35 by 45 millimeters. Convert with the DPI maths above: 35 by 45 mm at 300 DPI works out to roughly 413 by 531 pixels.
Email and Website Caps
Gmail caps a single message at 25MB of attachments and quietly converts anything larger into a Google Drive link, while accepting incoming mail up to 50MB. Because files are encoded before sending, the real usable ceiling is a little under the stated one.
Website content management systems are a different beast. Most hosts set their own upload ceiling, often somewhere between 2MB and 64MB. It varies wildly by host. Rather than fight it, resize before uploading. It is better for your page speed anyway. A 4000 pixel photo displayed in a 800 pixel wide column is 25 times more data than the page needs. Every visitor pays for it.
Aspect Ratio Math You Can Do in Your Head
Aspect ratio is just width divided by height. A 4000 by 3000 photo gives you 1.333, which is 4:3. A 1920 by 1080 screen gives 1.778, which is 16:9.
The only formula you need in practice: to keep proportions, multiply your new width by the original height, then divide by the original width. That 4000 by 3000 photo at a new width of 1200 needs a height of 1200 × 3000 ÷ 4000, which is 900.
Keep the ratio lock on and the tool does that arithmetic as you type. Turn it off when you deliberately want a different shape. Crop or fit then resolves the difference.
One habit worth building: know your source ratio before you pick a target. A 9:16 story photo forced into a 16:9 thumbnail is losing roughly three quarters of its frame. That is not a resize, it is an amputation. You are better off recomposing the shot.
Mistakes That Quietly Ruin a Resized Image
Enlarging a Screenshot and Hoping
Screenshots are captured at exactly the size they were displayed. There is no reserve of detail hiding in there. Blow one up for a presentation and the text goes mushy. Retake it on a higher resolution display or zoom the page before capturing.
Resizing the Same JPG Over and Over
Every JPG save re-compresses whatever it is given, including the compression artifacts from last time. Do it five times and the damage compounds like a photocopy of a photocopy. Always start from your original file rather than from the version you resized yesterday.
Forgetting That Profile Pictures Become Circles
Instagram, X, LinkedIn and WhatsApp all crop profile photos to a circle. Anything you tuck into a corner is invisible. Compose square, imagine a circle inside it and keep everything that matters within that circle.
Ignoring the Safe Zone on Banners
Cover images and headers get cropped differently on every device. Your carefully placed logo at the far left is the first casualty on mobile. Center band only.
Sending Line Art Through JPG
Logos, diagrams and screenshots with text develop a faint gray fuzz around hard edges when compressed as JPG. It is subtle at high quality and hideous at low. Use PNG for anything with sharp lines and flat color.
Cutting Pixels When Compression Would Have Done
People asked for a 200KB file often start by halving the dimensions, which throws away detail permanently. Try compression first. A 1080 pixel photo at quality 70 is usually well under 200KB and looks far better than a 540 pixel photo at quality 95. The file size mode does this in the right order for you.
