Five Across or Five Down
5 × 2 Grid lays five columns over two rows, so the ten photos sit in a wide band that reads like two lines of text. 2 × 5 Grid stands the same idea on end: two columns, five rows, as tall and thin as a shop receipt. Both fill row by row from the top left.
Each cell in 5 × 2 Grid is two fifths as wide, for its height, as the canvas under it. That is a harder squeeze than a 2 × 2, 3 × 2 or 4 × 2 grid ever puts on a cell. On the square canvas the editor starts with, an upright phone photo keeps 51 percent of itself there. Stretch the canvas to 16:9 and the same photo keeps 96.
Columns Stacked Three and Four
Columns 3 · 4 · 3 splits the canvas into three equal columns and cuts them into three, four and three cells. Columns 3 · 3 · 4 moves the stack of four to the right-hand edge. Both fill one column at a time, top to bottom, starting on the left, so in Columns 3 · 3 · 4 the last four photos you add end up on the right.
On a square the cells of three come out square and the cells of four come out almost exactly the shape of a sideways phone photo, which keeps 99 percent there. Upright photos lose the most in those short cells. Even so, at 56 percent Columns 3 · 4 · 3 is the kindest of the eight to upright photos on the square start, which is why the button at the top opens it.
Mosaic Ten
Mosaic Ten throws the grid away. Three cells run across the top. Below them one big cell fills the left half, while a letterbox strip and two small cells share the right. Three more close the bottom: small, wide, small. The big cell covers a fifth of the canvas and is the fourth to fill.
Sort the photos before you add them. On a square, the eighth and tenth cells stand upright and keep 91 percent of an upright phone photo. The fifth is a strip two and a half times wider than tall, the place for a panorama. Sideways photos keep at least 79 percent in the seven cells left over.
Why Ten Photos Suit a Screen Better Than Paper
Ten is an awkward number for a grid. It factors only as 1 × 10 and 2 × 5, so there is no square arrangement the way nine gives you 3 × 3. In 5 × 2 Grid, five columns share the width and two rows share the height. Give a 3:4 phone photo a cell of its own shape and the canvas has to come out 15:8, nearly twice as wide as it is tall.
The common print sizes stop at 3:2, the shape of a 4 × 6. Screens come close. A 16:9 frame, the shape of a YouTube thumbnail, an X post and a 1920 × 1080 display, is 1.78:1. Put ten upright photos in 5 × 2 Grid on the YouTube Thumbnail preset and each keeps 96 percent. The Link Preview preset, at 1.91:1, edges ahead at 97, the best any ten photo layout gets from upright phone photos on any preset in the editor.
Turn everything round for sideways photos. 2 × 5 Grid on Story and Reels, the 9:16 screen of a phone held upright, keeps 96 percent of ten 4:3 shots.
Paper struggles with both grids. On 4 × 6 Landscape, the widest print preset, 5 × 2 Grid keeps 80 percent of upright photos. Drop the grid and the same sheet does far better. Hero Beside Nine keeps 94 there, the most any ten photo layout manages on paper. The big photo takes half the width. Half of a 3:2 sheet is almost exactly the 3:4 a phone already shot. Ten Photos Against the Limits of Built-In Apps
Ten photos turn up all the time: a top ten, a decade of birthdays, a weekend away that went better than planned. Most built-in tools stop short of them. Google Photos caps a collage at six photos on Android and iPhone and at nine on a computer, so ten fails on both. Instagram's Layout tool fits six photos into a Story and no more. X attaches four photos to a post.
Instagram Stories do let you pick ten photos from the gallery at once, but each one arrives as a slide of its own, as our guide to adding multiple photos to one Instagram Story shows. One image gets past every one of these limits. This editor lays out ten photos in a phone browser and goes on to layouts for up to 36 photos.
Ten also has history on Instagram. When carousels arrived in February 2017, one post held up to ten photos or videos. That ceiling stood for more than seven years, until Instagram doubled it to 20 on 8 August 2024.
Layouts for a Top 10, a Decade, a Mixed Roll and a Trip
A Ranked Top 10
A ranking needs cells of equal weight and an order anyone can follow without a key. 5 × 2 Grid gives you both. It fills row by row, so numbers one to five cross the top and six to ten run along the bottom, left to right, the way a list reads.
For a countdown, add number ten first and finish on the winner in the bottom right corner. Put a small number on each photo with a text layer. On the YouTube Thumbnail preset every upright photo keeps 96 percent. A 3× download comes out at 3840 × 2160, the size YouTube's help page asks for. When the winner deserves more room, Mosaic Ten gives its fourth cell a fifth of the canvas, so your number one goes in fourth.
A Decade, One Photo a Year
Ten years makes ten photos. A tenth birthday with one picture from every year so far. A decade in the same job. A marriage that has reached tin, which an 1858 farmer's almanac already named as the tenth anniversary gift.
Add year one first. In 5 × 2 Grid the top row carries years one to five and the bottom row six to ten, so the decade reads in two lines. Old prints come in every shape, so photograph or scan them, then drag inside each cell to keep the faces whole. A year typed under each photo spares the viewer the arithmetic.
Six Upright, Four Sideways
Camera rolls rarely hold one shape. Columns 3 · 4 · 3 on Instagram Portrait copes with that: its six outer cells stand tall and its middle four lie wide.
Add three upright photos, then the four sideways ones, then the last three upright. The upright photos keep 95 percent at the sides and the sideways ones keep 80 down the middle. On a square the split swings the other way, 99 percent for the sideways four and 75 for the upright six. With Columns 3 · 3 · 4, add all six upright photos first, since the four-stack comes last.
A City Break in Ten Frames

Instagram Feed Posts
For upright photos choose Instagram Portrait, 1080 × 1350, with Columns 3 · 4 · 3. The six outer photos keep 95 percent and the middle four 71. A Tall 3:4 canvas lifts that to 98 and 76. Instagram has shown 3:4 posts uncropped since late May 2025.
Wide works too. Instagram accepts landscape posts up to 1.91:1, the Link Preview shape, where 5 × 2 Grid keeps 97 percent. The catch is size. The feed shows a post 1080 pixels across, which leaves each photo about 205 pixels wide. Sizing guides put profile thumbnails at 3:4. On that shape a 1.91:1 post shows only its middle two columns.
Stories, Reels and Shorts
Story and Reels is 1080 × 1920, a 9:16 frame. Sideways photos keep 96 percent in 2 × 5 Grid there and square ones 72. Upright photos do better in Columns 3 · 4 · 3, at 72 percent, because its middle four cells come out the exact shape of an upright phone photo. A 2× download measures 2160 × 3840, the size YouTube asks for on a Shorts thumbnail. Keep faces away from the top and bottom edges, where the apps print names and buttons.
YouTube Thumbnails and X Posts
YouTube Thumbnail and X Post are both 16:9. Ten upright photos in 5 × 2 Grid keep 96 percent on either. YouTube takes JPG or PNG up to 2 MB from a phone and 50 MB from a computer. A 3840 pixel PNG of ten photos can blow past 2 MB, so save a JPG when you upload from your phone. X takes four photos a post, so ten separate photos need three posts where one collage needs one.

A 4 × 6 shrinks each outer photo to about 1.2 × 1.9 inches, readable in the hand and lost on a wall. A4 Portrait roughly doubles each side, to 2.5 × 3.7 inches, while still keeping 81 percent of an upright photo.
A Ten-Opening Frame or One Collage Print
Search for a 10 photo collage frame and the shops answer with wall frames cut for ten separate 4 × 6 prints. Each window takes one print of its own, so a collage has nowhere to sit in one.
A collage wants a frame with a single window. Size the design to the photo the frame holds, not the frame's outside measurement, then print at exactly that size. Not here. This page counts columns first, so 2 × 5 Grid has two columns and five rows and stands tall, while 5 × 2 Grid has five columns and two rows and lies wide. Plenty of editors count rows first, so trust the miniature over the name.
Which photo lands in the biggest cell of Mosaic Ten?
The fourth one you add. Photos fill the cells in order and the fourth cell of Mosaic Ten covers a fifth of the canvas.
What if six of my photos are upright and four are sideways?
Use Columns 3 · 4 · 3 on Instagram Portrait and add three upright photos, then the four sideways ones, then the last three upright. The upright photos keep 95 percent in the tall outer cells and the sideways ones 80 percent down the middle.
Can I print a 10 photo collage as a 4 × 6?
Yes. Stand the sheet up: 4 × 6 Portrait is 1200 × 1800 pixels at 300 DPI. Use Columns 3 · 4 · 3 there and upright phone photos keep 86 percent and the outer six print about 1.2 × 1.9 inches each. Lay the same sheet sideways and Hero Beside Nine beats it at 94 percent. For bigger photos, A4 Portrait roughly doubles each side.
My phone shoots 16:9. Which layout fits?
Held upright, a phone set to 16:9 takes 9:16 photos, taller and thinner than usual. 5 × 2 Grid on A4 Landscape keeps 100 percent of ten of them and 5 × 7 Landscape keeps 99. The best any digital canvas manages is 94.
Will a frame with ten openings hold this collage?
No. A frame with ten openings holds ten separate prints, usually 4 × 6, one behind each window. A collage needs a frame with a single window. Print it at the size of the photo that frame takes, not its outside edge.
Can I change the order after adding the photos?
Yes. Drag any photo onto another cell and the two trade places. Each keeps its own crop, zoom and filter.
How do I get rid of the gaps between the photos?
Open Spacing and press Edge to edge. Gap, outer margin and corner rounding fall to zero together and the ten photos sit flush. For coloured lines, keep the gap and pick a background colour: the background is what shows between the cells.
Can the ten cells be circles or stars?
Yes. Photo shape holds 10 outlines, among them a circle, a star and a hexagon. The one you pick applies to all ten cells at once.
Does the download carry a watermark?
No. The file lands on your device as PNG, JPG or WebP with nothing added to it.
Are my ten photos uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything is processed here itself, nothing is uploaded to our servers. Closing the tab clears the photos from the page, so save the collage before you go.
Why won't my iPhone photos open?
Your iPhone probably saved them as HEIC, its default format. Of the major browsers only Safari 17 and later opens HEIC, while Chrome, Edge and Firefox refuse it. Open the editor in Safari or set Settings, Camera, Formats to Most Compatible so the camera saves JPEG from now on.
Does the collage keep the location data from my photos?
No. The download is drawn fresh from the pixels, so camera details and GPS coordinates stay out of it. The original files on your device keep theirs.
What happens if I add an eleventh photo?
The editor moves to a layout built for eleven and keeps the first ten in the order you added them.
How do I write alt text for a 10 photo collage?
A screen reader meets the collage as one picture, so one alt text has to cover all ten photos. Say what the set is first, then walk it in fill order. For a Top 10 in 5 × 2 Grid that means the top row from left to right, then the bottom row. On Instagram, open Advanced Settings before you share and tap Write Alt Text.
Can I make a 10 photo collage on my phone?
